Hill Ouston Reproduction Jacobite Engraved Wine Glass c1935

About the Item

Heading : Hill Ouston reproduction Jacobite engraved wine glass Period : George V - c1935 Origin : Stourbridge, England Colour : Clear Bowl : Ogee - engraved with a rose with two open buds Stem : A pair of 7-ply bands outwith a double helix Foot : Conical Pontil : Moulded 'snapped' pontil Glass Type : Lead Size : 15.1cm height, 6.3cm diameter bowl, 7.9cm diameter foot Condition : Excellent, no chips or cracks Restoration : None Weight: 197 grams There are a wide number of signs that this is not an originial Jacobite wine glass. There are: no pucella marks in the bowl, no inclusions, the engraving is 'flat' and has V shaped cuts, it does not have the characteristic open and closed buds, the glass is bright etc. etc. This glass was made as an homage to the great glassmaking tradition in this country and Hill Ouston's range contained a large number of Georgian replicas. We have seen far less faithful "homages" sold as the real deal by less scrupulous dealers than ourselves. Alas. This was purchased by our client at an East Anglian Auction Room for in excess of £700 and eas sold as being Jacobite and c1760. He was delighted with his purchase until he asked for a second opinion. Unfortunately the auctioneer would not accept a return ( like most) as two weeeks had elapsed since the purchase, this sadly is common practice amongst auctioneers who simply claim that descriptions are "an opinion" and not to be taken as read. Mis-selling does simply notb apply to the self-proclaimed gods of antiquities. Caveat emptor.

This is a very good hand-blown, English, mid-Georgian, Wine drinking glass with a round funnel (RF) engraved bowl on a solid stem, dating to the middle of the 18th century, circa 1760. These glasses are very collectable. It is made from English lead glass which is relatively heavy and has a soft grey colour. The RF (round funnel) bowl is well engraved with OXO under rim and a facet cut bowl base, sitting on a a solid stem, over a conical foot with a snapped off pontil below to the underside. The foot has an under rim edge chip but is otherwise very good with on evidence of restoration. (NOTE: We do not normally buy Georgian wine glasses...
