Maurice Heaton Enameled Glass "Cosmos" Plate, circa 1935

About

A large, enameled glass plate by Maurice Heaton (American/Swiss 1900-1989), a pioneering craftsman in the American Studio Glass movement, who developed the innovative technique of fusing enamel to glass. Though seemingly simple modern design, Heaton's glassmaking process was complex and labor- intensive. He developed a technique of fusing vitreous glazes to flat sheets of bubbled glass through firing. The pieces were then molded and the white glaze would appear to be beneath the color (for a detailed description of Heaton's process and work see craft in the Machine Age, Janet Kardon ed., pp. 90-91). The finished pieces were delicate and beautiful. Incised initials "MH" on each plate Heaton's work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Corning (NY) Glass Museum. Plates sold individually. 14 available. All signed.
