Mid-Century Modern Fused Glass Tray by Higgins

About

This is an early and rare tray by modernist Chicago glass artists Michael and Frances Higgins, pioneers in working with fused glass. The abstract design parallels the emergence of Abstract Expressionism in the 1940s and 1950s--Higgins' organic, amoebic forms recall the work of Arshile Gorky and other significant abstract artists of the period. A dynamic example of Mid-Century glass.

Marked with the incised Higgins signature and raised stick figure that dates it to 1951-1957.

Their work was included in the pivotal exhibition "Glass 1959" at The Toledo Museum of Art.
