Saara Hopea (1925–1984) was a celebrated Finnish glass designer, best known for her elegant and timeless creations for Nuutajärvi Glassworks and Iittala. She was a key figure in mid-20th-century Scandinavian design. Her work combined functional simplicity with delicate beauty, often featuring organic forms and subtle textures.
Born in Helsinki, Hopea studied at the Central School of Industrial Design and later worked under the mentorship of Gunnel Nyman, another pioneering Finnish designer. Her most famous designs include the "Harlekiiini" (Harlequin) glassware series (1958), characterized by playful stripes and vibrant colors, as well as her refined "Sini" (Blue) and "Orvokki" (Violet) tableware collections.
Hopea's work embodied the Finnish modernist tradition, emphasizing clean lines, harmony, and craftsmanship. Today, her pieces remain highly collectible, celebrated for their enduring elegance and contribution to Nordic design heritage.
