About the Item

A silver medal (Milan Triennial 1954) awarded set of stacking glasses 1718/20cl and pitcher 1618/100cl in a willow osier basket with rattan wrapped handle. These glasses have been made in multiple different colors and combinations. A simple yet practical and colorful set perfect for summer garden parties, colorful occasions or just every day use. The set is in good condition with usual wear and tear consistent with use and age. Saara Hopea (1925–1984) was a celebrated Finnish glass designer, best known for her elegant and timeless creations for Nuutajärvi Glassworks and Iittala. She was a key figure in mid-20th-century Scandinavian design. Her work combined functional simplicity with delicate beauty, often featuring organic forms and subtle textures. Born in Helsinki, Hopea studied at the Central School of Industrial Design and later worked under the mentorship of Gunnel Nyman, another pioneering Finnish designer. Her most famous designs include the "Harlekiiini" (Harlequin) glassware series (1958), characterized by playful stripes and vibrant colors, as well as her refined "Sini" (Blue) and "Orvokki" (Violet) tableware collections. Hopea's work embodied the Finnish modernist tradition, emphasizing clean lines, harmony, and craftsmanship. Today, her pieces remain highly collectible, celebrated for their enduring elegance and contribution to Nordic design heritage.
