Saint Louis Crystal blue cut to clear bowl with Sulphide c1910
About the Item
An exceptional intricately, cut to clear, bowl by Saint Louis - Rarely this bowl has a sulphide to the front depicting a courtier. The bowl is cases in blue and finely cut to clear to generate a pattern of lines and small roundels. The lower parts of the sides of the bowl are decorated with inverted tear like shapes -these are exceptionally hard to cut precisely.
Sulphides (also known as Cameo Incrustations) are opaque, usually white, medallions or figurines encased in glass and usually used to decorate clear glass objects. They can most often be found in paperweights but more rarely the were used to decorate bowls, decanters and jugs etc
Saint Louis was and still is one of the three great Crystal glassworks the others being Val Saint Lambert and Baccarat.

Bohemian Art Nouveau Harrach Purple to Clear Wheel cut shaped Glass Vase, 1900
By Harrach Glassworks
Located in Worcester Park, GB
A vibrant Art Nouveau purple to clear intaglio cut Harrach vase with rare shaped 'cut-out' top outlining the higher buds. Depicting Flowering Lilies highlighted with gilding. This style of intaglio cut vase (with cut-out top) was taken by Harrach to the 1900 Paris exhibition. Very unusually this vase has stylised geometric cuts radiating from the base.
Harrach has been the backbone of Bohemian, and possibly European, glass for the last 300 years. It proudly celebrates its tri-centenary in 2012. Before Ludwig Moser was allowed to have his own Glassworks he, like almost everyone else in the region, bought his blanks from Harrach. In fact we will probably never know how much glass, supposedly made my other great glass makers of Europe, were in fact made and finished in the Harrach Glassworks. We do know that vast ranges of Legras was made by Harrach, probably under licence and possibly the majority of the glass we think of as Fratelli Tosso...
