Fine George III Sauceboat, of Good Size, Made in London by Henry Chawner in 1793
About the Item
The Sauceboat stands on an oval collet foot engraved with an outer prick dot band. The main body is of a good size and has an everted prick dot rim. The upper section of the main body is also engraved with a beautiful band of foliate motifs and flower heads in ovals, all on a scratch engraved ground. The high loop handle is decorated with reeding and this piece is very well marked in the foot. Henry Chawner was a Master of decorative engraving and this piece is no exception.
Measures: Height, to the top of the handle 5 inches, 12.5cm.

The Sauceboat stands on a circular cast and applied spreading foot which is decorated with reeding. The elongated main body has a protruding upper section and finely shaped rim. This example has a leaf capped scroll handle and the side of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Crest, surrounded by a scrollwork cartouche. Each cistern is in the form of a fluted vase on a rectangular pedestal. The lead-lined vases have brass handles, removable lids with pineapple finials and taps. The crossbanded pedestals have cupboard doors enclosing slatted shelves for warming plates in one and a lead-lined slops drawers, a tambour fronted shelf and a cellaret in the other.
Susan Stuart, 'Gillow of Lancaster and London', 2008 vol 1 p308-315 illustrates many pedestal urns including the drawings for Workington Hall, Cumbria, dated 1788. PLates 342 and 343 show pedestals with a similar arrangement of shelves and drawers. Thomas Sheraton explained the functions of dining room pedestals in his 'Drawing Book' of 1793: 'IN spacious dining rooms the sideboards are often made without drawers of any sort, having simply a rail, a little ornament...

This exceptional antique Georgian sterling silver tea caddy has an oval form.
The surface of the tea caddy is encompassed with bright cut engraved fabric swag designs and floral festoons, suspended from impressive spiralling foliate anchor-points accented with pensile bud designs.
Each spiralling motif flanks a shield shaped cartouche displaying the contemporary engraved initials 'WM' and surmounted with a ribbon style bow.
The upper and lower portions of the body are encompassed with engraved bands of chevron style decoration, in addition to an applied bead decorated border.
