Late 19th C French Six Hand Blown Absinthe Glasses and Accessories, 19 Pc. Set

$1,550per set

About

Everything needed to prepare and serve the distilled spirit Absinthe – a set of six French Absinthe glasses, six slotted sugar spoons, six metal drink coasters, and the sugar stand. The glasses, spoons, and the stand de sucre date from 1890 to 1910. The coasters date to 1924. The heavy hand blown glasses were used in French bistros, bars, and cafes, in the ritual of drinking the addictive beverage called, ‘la fée verte’ – the green fairy. Popular with Bohemians and artists, Absinthe was eventually banned in France by 1915. The six glasses are in the classic ‘Torsade” shape, made specifically for serving Absinthe. With a pedestal base, the weighted bottoms have a swirl form, showing the small bubbles and pontils distinctive to hand blown glass. The six slotted spoons are designed to sit on the rim and hold a sugar cube. Ice water would be dripped over the sugar, diluting the green absinthe, and turning it into a milky white Pastis. The spoons have ridged handles for resting on the rim of the glass. The set also includes six metal coasters commemorating the new 25 centime coins of 1924. The coasters read: Liberte Egalite Fraternite 25 C’mes 1924. A difficult to find pedestal sugar server would hold the sugar cubes used in the preparation ritual. Measures: Glasses: 6.25 in. H – 3 in. base – 2.25 in. top opening Spoons: 6.25 in. L x 1.25 in. W – Marked, Extra Blanc on handles. Coasters: 3 in. round – with red felted backings. Sugar: 3.75 in. Diameter x 1.75 in. H – Weighted gold tone metal, marked Ercuis Handmade artisan glasses will vary slightly in size and weight. All pieces are in very good antique condition with minor age wear. The spoons and sugar server show the expected light patina.
