About the Item

This is a Victorian liquid bellied lidless, Gill measurer with a brass rim and inscription of the owner. A capacity mark such as ‘pint’ or ‘quart’ is self explanatory. Such marks became a legal requirement in 1836 in England. The presence of such a mark does not mean the item is post-1836 as vessels made before then which remained in use after 1836 were often marked retrospectively. Equally, the absence of any capacity mark does not mean the vessel must be pre-1836 as not everyone adhered to the law. A verification mark signifies that the measure has been inspected by an official Weights & Measures Inspector and found to be of the correct capacity.
