19th Century WR Loftus London English Tavern Two Gallon Copper Measure

About the Item

A monumental Victorian era copper two gallon ale measure made by W. R. Loftus, Oxford Street, London, England. circa 1870 Most impressive large size, hand-crafted in traditional haystack form with a deep lip and pour spout, small neck, broad base, and riveted reinforced handle. The bulbous vessel body inscribed "Two Gallon", stamped with official crown over MW mark to rim interior, signed WR Loftus London. Retaining original antique character and charm throughout, including highly desirable verdigris patina, scattered scuffs, dings, and antique character marks that add to the elegant rustic warmth, rich history, and overall charm. The measure was used in taverns to truthfully measure ale or cider to protect society from fraud during trading transactions. With a largely illiterate population at the time, the interests of every citizen needed to be considered and cared for so stamped and sealed measures were used throughout the British Isles. For example, in 1309 it was decreed “The Standard of bushels, gallIons and ells shalI be sealed with an iron seal of our Lord the King ... And no measure shall be in any town unless it do agree with the King’s measure, and marked with the seal of the shire town" W. R. Loftus, 146 and 320 Oxford Street, London, were manufacturers of industrial scientific instruments and brewing equipment during the 19th century. William Loftus published 'The Brewer' in 1863 and 'The Maltster' in 1876. Dimensions: (approx) 12" High, 15" Wide, 12" Deep; Great original unrestored antique condition with beautifully aged patina and warm polished copper sheen. Wear consistent with age and indicative of industrial use, including scattered attractive verdigris green patina, scuffs, minor dings, dents, and imperfections. Structurally sound, sturdy and stable. A wonderful example, the massive measuring cup presents splendidly, with distinctive sculptural jug or pitcher silhouette, handsome warm copper coloring, brilliant polished sheen and distressed patina, perfect decorative object, farmhouse kitchen decor, beer lovers gift idea, fascinating and historical curiosity and interesting conversation starter!
