20th century French Vintage Vallauris Pitcher and two Glasses, 1960s

About the Item

A pitcher and two orangeade glasses in Vallauris earthenware signed Grandjean-Jourdan from the 1960s. Wood imitation. Good condition. Stamp below. The famous “fake woods” of the Grandjean-Jourdan dynasty (Sébastien and then his son Eugène Grandjean). The idea of imitating olive wood was born by chance when a decorator was trying to blur the brushstrokes of the wood-colored backgrounds of one of the ceramics with a cotton pad. Born in 1920 in Golfe-Juan, Eugène Grandjean completed his secondary studies in Cannes. From 1940, he learned the potter's trade from his father, Sébastien Grandjean. The company name of this factory was already Grandjean-Jourdan but it then produced culinary pottery. From this date, Eugène Grandjean never left the factory and in 1957, the date of his father's death, he took over its management permanently. In 1981 the factory closed its doors.
