Antique Pair of Sterling Silver Ewers Jugs by John Bridge, 1825

This is a wonderful pair of English 18th Century antique sterling silver salvers by the renowned silversmith John Carter. They each have hallmarks for London 1772, the makers mark of John Carter and are typical of his work with the exquisitely detailed rims, ball and claw feet and the superb engraved decoration. They each bear a beautifully engraved coat of arms and the crest of the Terry Family, which I have researched: The Arms of the Family of Terry The arms as engraved upon this Pair of George III English Sterling Silver Footed Salvers by John Carter hallmarked London 1872 are those of the family of Terry. They may be blazoned as follows: Arms: Sable on two bars or three cross crosslets two and one (……?) and issuant from the bar in chief a demi-lion rampant Crest: A boar’s head erased and erect Motto: E cruce leo [From the cross a lion] The arms as engraved upon this pair of salvers certainly have characteristics with arms borne by another family and branch thereof named Terry who hailed from the County of Cork in Ireland. Notably the use of the three cross crosslets and the demilion rampant, but in a different placement upon the arms. The crest seen here is also at a variance with the other Terry arms where a demi-lion rampant is used. Upon an exhaustive examination of other sources, together with the present evidence, I believe that the family who had the salvers in their possession undoubtedly bore these arms without authority a fact that often occurred in the 18th and 19th Centuries and at other periods. An exceptional, fine and impressive, antique William IV English sterling silver cream jug; an addition to our silver teaware collection. This exceptional antique sterling silver cream jug has an baluster shaped form onto a domed pedestal and an octagonal shaped spreading foot. The body of this silver cream jug is embellished with embossed floral ornamentation accented with scrolling leaf designs and panels of scale textures. The decoration to the body incorporates a scroll bordered and features a vacant cartouche to one side. The lower portion of the body encompassed with the contemporary engraved inscription 'Presented by the South Devon Agricultural Society to Richard Anthony for the best managed Farm under 150 acres'. The rim of this 1830s cream jug is embellished with an applied alternating shell decorated border. This fine example of antique silverware is fitted with an impressive cast antique mystical fish decorated handle ornamented with scale decoration. The domed circular portion of the foot is encircled with a band of floral and scrolling leaf decoration. The interior of this antique silver cream jug retains the original gilding. Condition This antique 1830s cream jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition. The applied and chased decoration is very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the spout have wear in keeping with age and location; the maker’s mark has wear but remains legible. An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver coffee jug made by Joseph Angell I & Joseph Angell II; an addition to our antique silverware collection. This exceptional antique sterling silver coffee jug, in sterling standard, has a baluster form. The body of this Victorian coffee jug is embellished with an impressive broad band of bright cut ornamentation depicting connected Grecian figures intertwined with long flowing fabric, all on a matte background. This narrative scene is flanked with an impressive interlacing leaf decorated border to the lower portion and a scrolling Akroter decorated band to the upper portion, in addition to plain moulded borders to the rims. This impressive antique coffee jug is fitted with a flush hinged hallmarked cover encircled with a bright cut engraved undulating band; the flush indicates the high quality of the piece. The cover is surmounted by the original sterling silver finial in the formation of a flower comprised of scrolling leaf designs and textures. The coffee jug retains the original rounded sterling silver handle, incorporating a leaf design to the upper portion and an exceptional leaf design to the lower socket. An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Italian silver sterling jug. This exceptional antique Italian sterling silver jug has an oval paneled, flared form onto a circular domed foot. The surface of this antique jug is plain and unembellished, with a matte, subtly planished finish in keeping with the patination of a piece from this period. This impressive piece is fitted with an exceptional cast sterling silver scrolling handle, accented with a leaf design emanating from the thumbpiece, this leaf ornamentation comprises the upper terminal. The circular foot is encircled with a band of embossed bead decoration. This impressive antique silver jug has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as sterling standard silver (925/1000). Patination or Patina is a subtle coloration or tarnish which forms on the surface of some metals, produced by oxidation or other chemical processes. A good patina proffers an aesthetically pleasing look. Condition This antique silver jug is a very good gauge of silver and exceptional quality for its type.
