Antique Silvered Bronze Pitcher from France, Circa 1890

About the Item

An exquisite example of Rococo style ornamentation, this antique (circa 1890) silvered bronze pitcher comes from France. The pitcher has been adorned with spiral fluting that expand as the body widens. A scalloped leaf surrounds the pitcher above and below the fluting, along with a third ring on the base, above two layers of molding and a geometric plinth with ogee curves. There are two handles on opposite sides of the pitcher, both formed by a series of contradictory C-scrolls and curled leaves. The smaller handle also includes an asymmetrical leaf beneath the lower scroll and a heavily bearded mascaron that is affixed to the upper scroll and the curled leaves that encircle the opening. There are additional leaves and scrolls that comprise the larger handle, plus the addition of a putti at the top arc. In the putti’s left hand is the top of a long, floral garland that trails down one side of the pitcher before terminating on top of the base of the smaller handle. Our silvered bronze pitcher from France would make a fantastic decorative accessory. It could also be used as a vase for cut flowers.
