Georgian Mason's Ironstone Jug or Pitcher in Basket Japan Pattern, circa 1818

About the Item

This is a very good, early Mason's Ironstone Hydra jug or pitcher in the Basket Japan pattern, made in the English, late Georgian period, circa 1815-1820. This jug is very decorative and of mid size, as these jugs were made in a large range of sizes. The jug has the octagonal "hydra" shape with a notched snake handle and is decorated in the distinctive "Basket Japan" pattern, which is one of Mason's well known chinoiserie patterns, using bold hand painted enamels of cobalt blue, green and burnt orange all in various shades and possibly over a light printed outline. This pattern is illustrated on Page 103 of "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, circa 1813-circa 1848" as published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. This jug is fully marked to the base with one of Mason's earliest recorded printed marks showing a large crown, wide spaced M A S O N ' S and " Patent Ironstone China" in a banner. This piece has the free flowing hand painted style only seen on the early pieces. Overall a good, very decorative and useful Georgian piece and with no damage.
