Georgian Mason's Small Ironstone Jug or Pitcher Basket Japan Pattern, Ca 1820
About the Item
This is a good, early and small Mason's Ironstone hydra jug or pitcher in the Basket Japan pattern, made in the English, late Georgian period, circa 1815-1820.
These hydra jugs were made in a large range of sizes with the rarer pieces being the large ones and the very small like this one.
This jug has the octagonal "hydra" shape with a notched snake handle and is decorated in the distinctive "Basket Japan" pattern, which is one of Mason's well known chinoiserie patterns, using bold hand painted enamels of cobalt blue, green and burnt orange all in various shades and possibly over a light printed outline. This pattern is illustrated on Page 103 of "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, circa 1813-circa 1848" as published by The Mason's Collectors' Club.
This jug is unmarked to the base which was often the case where the jug formed part of a larger graduated set with only some of the pieces marked.
This piece has the free flowing hand painted style only seen on the early pieces.
Overall a good Masons Ironstone Georgian piece and with no damage.
