Mason's Ironstone Hydra Jug or Pitcher Water Lily Pattern, circa 1880
About the Item
This is a very good jug or pitcher by Mason's ironstone, England, circa 1880.
The jug has the Hydra shape with the snake heads handle with lower spur.
This jug has one of the very decorative and sought after oriental, Chinoiserie patterns called the " Water Lily", as documented on page 136 of A Guide to Mason's Patent ironstone patterns, circa 1813-1848, published by The Masons Collectors' Club. The pattern is hand-painted in bold enamels over a printed under-glaze blue outline with additional gilded highlighting, particularly to the handle which has a dark Mazarine blue ground.
The base of the Jug has the printed blue round crown mark, which dates this jug to circa 1880.
