About the Item

This is a very good small Hydra jug or pitcher, made by Mason's Ironstone, England in the Chinese Dragon Pattern and dating to the 19th century, circa 1880. The jug is octagonal in shape with the snake handle. These jugs were made in a range of sizes, varying from very small of under three inches high to large ones at over 9 inches high. This jug is 4.35 inches in height. This jug has one of the rarer patterns called "Chinese Dragon" as documented on page 116 of "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, circa 1813-1848," published by The Masons Collectors' Club. The pattern would have been transfer printed in various shades of cobalt blue. The base of the jug has a blue printed rounded crown mark and banner, with Mason's above. Overall a very decorative Masons Ironstone Jug in one of their rarer Chinoiserie patterns called "Chinese Dragon".
