Rare Gorham Grapevine Drinks Set with Pitcher & Mug on Tray, 1888

About the Item

Victorian sterling silver drinks set. Made by Gorham in Providence in 1888. This set comprises pitcher and mug on tray. Pitcher and mug have curved bodies and split-mounted branch handles. Tray lobed quatrefoil. Applied scroll rims. For fermented refreshment as indicated by the on-message fruiting grapevines in tactile relief. Hefty rusticity wrought from precious metal. Each has engraved script monogram. Fully marked including maker’s stamp, date symbol, and nos. 230 (tray), 1520 (pitcher), and 4260 (mug). Dimensions: Pitcher: H 9 x W 8 1/2 x D 6 1/2 in. Mug: H 4 x W 5 x D 3 3/4 in. Tray: H 1 x W 16 x D 14 3/8 in. Total weight: 86 troy ounces.

    A magnificent ewer with exquisite repousse silver work depicting generous campagna vases overflowing with flowers, set on scrolled foliate bases. The rim decoration featuring a lined ribbon motif adorned with wreaths. Front design with a large oval laurel leaf border medallion topped with a depiction of a beautiful maiden flanked by wide foliate forms and Belle Epoque scrolls.
