S. Kirk & Son Sterling Silver Castle Landscape Repousse Pitcher from 1846-1861

About the Item

S. Kirk & Son rare sterling silver repousse pitcher with castle landscape and natural motifs, made between 1846 and 1861. Castle landscape on Kirk silver is rare and desirable. It measures 8 1/4'' in height by 4 1/4'' from handle to spout by 4 1/2'' in depth, weighs 10.4 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown. Baltimore’s prominent silver manufacturing company, Samuel Kirk & Son, dates its beginning to 1815. Just 5 years later, Maria Hester Monroe, daughter of President James Monroe, was married in the White House. She chose Kirk Mayflower as her silverware pattern. During this early period Kirk introduced to America the repousse treatment for silverware. Their works are present in the permanent collections of prestigious museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Cooper Hewitt, and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
