Silver Plate Victorian Water Pitcher
About the Item
James Stimpson was the inventor who first received the U.S. patent for a multi-walled ice pitcher on October 17th, 1854. Stimpson's design was the precursor to the modern thermos or Dewar flask, having a double sided and double bottom configuration, thus keeping the ice water inside insulated. This kept the contents colder longer and minimized condensation in the pre-air-conditioned Victorian household. Ice would last three times as long in the Stimpson design as it would in common pitchers of the times.
