1800s Dixon Phillips & Co. Brown Australian Pattern English Transferware Platter
About the Item
From the Dixon, Phillips & Co. pottery works in Sunderland, County Durham, England, circa 1834-1865, an earthenware transfer printed platter.
Unusual for the color, the platter is underglaze printed in brown on a creamy white body in the 'Australian' pattern. The British were colonizing Australia at the time this piece was made.
A romantic chinoiserie scene, the central image features Gothic buildings with pillars and towers, two figures in a sailboat on a river, and two deer on the shore. The border shows alternating panels of birds in a wicker basket, tall urns with flowers, and an urn surrounded by fruit, on a shaped rim.
Showing both a printed and an impressed makers mark.

By William Ridgway
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A black on white transfer printed floral platter in the Flosculous pattern, William Ridgway & Co., Shelton, Hanley, Staffordshire England, circa 1830-1854.
A gently scalloped black-printed platter in an unusual borderless pattern. Alternating floral sprays extend outward — from a three part scroll motif in the center — up the well and onto the rim of the plate. The term ‘flosculous’ means having flowerets or composite-flowered. This stylized pattern feels very modern.
