1890's Antique Mauviel Copper Sauteuse Commissioned By Grand Magazines Du Louvre

About the Item

Antique copper sauteuse stamped with the Grand Magazines Du Louvre mark and made by Mauviel in around 1890. Grands Magasins Du Louvre, a beautiful and discerning department store in Paris, commissioned a line of gorgeous copper cookware from Mauviel during the 1880s to early 1920s. This beautiful antique exemplifies design considerations that are expensive and difficult to produce. The handle emerges from the pan in a heart-shaped triple-riveted form, curving up in a swan-neck motion in smooth cast metal. The hand-hammering is also particularly satisfying on these early Mauviel examples, with a ‘uniformity’ of finish to this inherently unique aspect of each pan. Pans like this example were statement pieces. They said something about who you were, your business, your ethos. They differentiated your café from the one across the street. Dimensions: 10" diameter (pot body) 20.5" wide (with handles) 3" high (pan) 6.75" high (handle tip) Weight: 6lbs 4oz / 2835 grams Thickness: 2.295mm Condition: Very good. This pot has been professionally polished and retinned by East Coast Tinning. As a result, it looks almost as good as new. Provenance: Property from a Litchfield, Connecticut Estate Collection About Copper Cookware: Copper has played an important role in culinary history for centuries. No other metal can be counted on to absorb heat and distribute it as rapidly and evenly as copper. Similarly, when removed from the heat copper responds quickly. As a result of the responsiveness of copper cookware it has been the go-to choice for chefs and cooks all over the world.
