19th Century English Sheffield Hall Marked Silver Table Service with Case
About the Item
A fine Sheffield hall marked silver cased table service by Frederick Elkington
The seven piece suite comprising;- a tiered epergne, four footed sweetmeat stands and two elliptical trays, embossed with vines, grapes and foliates, all bearing clear assay Hall Marks for Sheffield, 1883, and the makers punch; engraved with a rampant lion, and the motto ‘Heb Dduw Heb Ddim’, the Welsh being translated as ‘Without God, We Have Nothing’; housed in a presentation case, bearing an engraved brass plaque noting the name of the recipient, and the presenters, the North Staffordshire Railway Company.

Provenance: The North Staffordshire Railway (NSR) was formed in 1845 to serve the Staffordshire Potteries, and area around Stoke on Trent, remaining independent until 1923, when it was amalgamated into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Company.

A mid-19th century lady’s travelling dressing case.
The case is constructed in a finely marked coromandel, with inset brass handles and brass guard bands to the angles. The hinged lid rises to reveal in the upper section, a drop down document holder, with a mirror to the back, the parcel gilt pieces are engraved with a Viscountess’s coronet, probably Charles, 2nd Viscount Hardinge Cornwallis (1822-1894) and inset with turquoises and comprise a suite of four cut-glass jars, a liqueur flask with a fitted cup, the pull-out rear shelf houses seven jars for ink, potions and unguents. The firm of Tétard was begun by Edmond Tétard in 1880, who achieved notable success for his silverware at the 1889 Paris exposition universelle, specialising in revivalist styles such as those of the ancien regime.
