Antique English Carlton Platter by Barker Bros, Early 20th Century

About the Item

This antique oval platter is a fine example of English transferware from the early 20th century, part of the “Carlton” pattern produced by Barker Bros at the Meir Works in Longton, Staffordshire. What sets it apart is the delicate green garland-and-ribbon motif encircling the rim—a rare color and design combination that feels both graceful and quietly opulent. The platter’s beautiful age-induced crazing and soft ivory glaze create a richly textured surface that only time can produce. This piece is more than functional tableware—it’s a fragment of English ceramic history. Made by one of Staffordshire’s respected potteries, its value lies in both craftsmanship and provenance. Its enduring durability, hand-applied detailing, and timeless appeal make it a worthy addition for collectors, stylists, or anyone drawn to the quiet luxury of antique table settings. The patina, in particular, gives it a museum-quality presence that is increasingly hard to find. The platter has a gently scalloped edge and substantial weight, giving it a pleasing, grounded feel in hand. Its finely crazed glaze has a satin-like finish, and the pattern—though softened with age—still reveals beautiful detail upon close inspection. In person, it exudes a tactile charm and nostalgic warmth, ideal as a serving piece or decorative display. Barker Bros was established in the late 19th century in Longton, one of the six towns that make up Stoke-on-Trent, the heart of England’s ceramic industry. By the early 1900s, they were producing refined ironstone wares under various pattern names, including “Carlton.” This piece reflects the Edwardian era’s love for classical ornament—medallions, floral swags, and bows—executed in a more restrained palette that anticipates modern minimalism. Crafted from English ironstone—a dense, durable ceramic ideal for daily use—the platter is finished with a transfer-printed floral border in green. Its style bridges Victorian elegance with early Edwardian restraint, making it versatile for both traditional and contemporary interiors. Whether hung on a wall or layered into a tablescape, it brings history and softness to any setting.
