About the Item

This richly detailed blue and white platter by Ashworth Brothers features the striking Yedo pattern—an evocative design inspired by Japanese prints and chinoiserie landscapes. What sets this piece apart is the deep cobalt palette and intricate transferwork that blends Eastern garden scenes with classic English formality. The generously proportioned oval shape and depth of blue glaze reflect a high level of craftsmanship uncommon in utilitarian wares of the period. Its balanced asymmetry, stylized floral forms, and stair-step fence motif give it a serene, almost architectural elegance. This is more than just a serving piece—it's a beautifully preserved artifact from the height of Victorian ceramic innovation. The Yedo pattern was never mass-produced in large quantities, and pieces in this condition and scale are increasingly rare. Ashworth Brothers, later known as part of Mason’s Ironstone, upheld a reputation for quality and distinctive design. The platter's crisp detail and saturated coloring make it an exceptional find for collectors of English transferware or blue and white ceramics. The platter is a classic oval with a finely rendered transfer design in vivid cobalt blue on a creamy white ground. The central image features a stylized Eastern landscape with blooming peonies, winding foliage, and a delicate fence-like architectural element. A matching border of large blossoms and winding vines surrounds the rim, giving the platter a richly layered look. The glaze is smooth with a subtle sheen, and a very small chip to the edge adds to the antique authenticity rather than detracting from its display value. Produced circa 1870 by Ashworth Brothers in Staffordshire, England, the Yedo pattern was named after the historical name for Tokyo and reflects the Victorian-era fascination with Japonisme and Oriental design. Ashworth acquired the original Mason’s Ironstone factory in the mid-19th century and continued to produce richly decorated ceramics for the British and export markets. These pieces often reflected a fusion of East and West, combining traditional English forms with motifs drawn from Chinese and Japanese art. This platter is a testament to that cross-cultural aesthetic and the high standards of Victorian ceramics.
