About the Item

A superb example of mid-Victorian Staffordshire blue-and-white, this Asiatic Pheasant large scalloped platter by Booths (circa 1870s) features an undulating, wavy rim that echoes the naturalistic theme. The central transfer-print depicts a pheasant amid foliage with stylised oriental motifs, executed in rich cobalt tones against a crisp white ground. The image displays a backmark found on a piece of pottery, specifically from the Booths company, featuring the initials "T.G.B.". This mark is associated with Thomas Gimbert Booth, who took over the Booths pottery business in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, after his father Thomas Booth died in 1872. The mark "T.G.B." was used during the period when Thomas Gimbert Booth was running the business, specifically from 1876-1883. Some pieces from this era may also feature the mark "T.G. & F. B." if they were produced during a transitional period when his brother Frederick Booth joined the business. This particular mark style, often seen on patterns like "Indian Ornament," was in use until around 1906, when Booths introduced "SILICON CHINA
