Blue and white tureen att. to Turner's of Lane End
About the Item
This good sized blue and white tureen is attributed to Turner's of Lane End, in Staffordshire. It is decorated with the printed pattern later known as Turner's Willow. Following Turner's bankruptcy, this pattern was used by Miles and William Mason and later by Charles and George Mason and their successors. It was also used by Hicks and Meigh. The tureen measures 245 mm (9 5/8 ths inches) in width, excluding the handles, 217 mm (8.5 inches) in depth, and stands 185 mm (7.25 inches) to the top of the finial. Overall it is in good condition with a few signs of wear and a very fine crack that runs down one side for 38 mm (1.5 inches). It is unmarked, but examples of the finial can be seen in Plate 32b in Bevis Hillier's "Turners of Lane End", and Plate 27, page 38 of Godden's "English Blue and White Porcelain". It dates from the period 1790-1800.
