About the Item

This tea tray from the late 19th century owes its decorative appeal to the beautiful grain of northern elm (yumu) and the warm brown color of its sheer lacquer finish. Once used to serve tea or hold scholarly implements, the shallow tray is minimally decorated, enclosed by a square frame carved with ridged or reeded sides and a finely beaded edge. Dovetail joinery at the corners adds charming detail to the simple form.
