About the Item
A French Majolica asparagus server made by Creil et Montereau, circa 1890. This large oval earthenware master serving platter, although made in one piece, has the trompe l’oeil effect of a curved brown woven basket sitting on a teal blue fluted under tray. Open handles at each end are formed of two curved, realistically painted asparagus spears. The footed back side is glazed in a turquoise wash and shows an impressed mark, B5, a mold number.
Book reference page # 119 of “Artichauts et Asperges en Barbotine” by Maryse Bottero.
A set of four individual 9" plates in this pattern are offered separately, as shown on the last photo.
