About the Item

In the canon of American Arts and Crafts, few names command reverence like Roycroft—and few objects better capture its ethos than this hammered copper tray. Made circa 1910, its surface glows with the hand-wrought irregularities that machines can never mimic, the hammered copper shifting from deep bronze to bright ember as it catches the light. At each corner, a trillium motif blooms in low relief, a quiet gesture of ornament held in perfect balance against the tray’s muscular form. To hold it is to feel the weight of conviction: Elbert Hubbard’s belief that beauty should infuse even the most utilitarian object, that craft was a moral act as much as an aesthetic one. Today, Roycroft copperwork is scarce, coveted by collectors who understand its place at the foundation of modern American design. To pass on a piece like this is to risk missing the heartbeat of the movement itself. This platform may flag this piece as priced above average—but that judgment is based on an algorithm that overlooks patina, provenance, and that certain je ne sais quoi that matters to collectors. We think those things matter.
