A very good large silver swing handle basket of pierced oval form. The arched swing handle with two cast female busts arising from a leaf capped double C-scroll support. The cast and applied rim of shaped foliate and floral entwined decoration. The central bowl of the basket engraved with a rocaille cartouche containing an armorial. The top of the handle is decorated with a leaf form cartouche within which is the crest of a deer. The sides of the raised basket with hand cut pierced decoration. The whole standing on four cast and applied legs, decorated with a beautiful scrolling foliate design rising to high relief female faces, on leaf-form pad feet. Hallmarked to the underside for London 1747 by Edward Aldridge. The underside of the handle bears the lion passant and maker’s mark, both struck twice. An exceptional, fine and impressive antique George III English sterling silver sugar basket; an addition to our Georgian silverware collection This exceptional antique George III sterling silver sugar basket with liner has a plain oval rounded form onto an oval swept pedestal foot. The surface of this fine example of Georgian silverware is embellished with bright cut engraved swags to the lower portion, below pierced decorated lozenge designs incorporating further bright cut engraved motifs. The upper portion of the is ornamented with pierced decorated stylized leaf designs. The rim of the body and foot are ornamented with an applied bead decorated border. The basket retains the original hallmarked bead decorated swing handle. This impressive antique silver sugar basket retains the original removable blue glass liner.
