George III Sauceboat Made in London by William Burwash, 1817
About the Item
A very unusual & substantial George III Sauceboat made in London in 1817 by William Burwash.
The Sauceboat stands on a plain oval collet, pedestal, foot and the rim of this piece is subtly shaped. The wide, baluster shaped, main body very unusually displays a protruding girdle which is decorated with vine leaves, grapes, and raying Rococo shells, interspersed with gadrooning. The handle is decorated with wide reeding and acanthus leaf motifs and are attached to the main body with stylised shell mouldings. The side of the main body is finely engraved with the Coronet of an Earl. The Sauceboat is in excellent condition and is of a very good weight. This is the first time we have seen this unusual design, with the decorative central girdle. William Burwash produced quality output from his workshops at 14, Bartholomew Close and was for sometime in partnership with Richard Sibley.
