About the Item

This rare size Chinese export platter was made for the American market of the Federal Period. The decoration is simple and refined and highly symbolic. It has edging of a thick cobalt blue band between two gold strips, with a running swag pattern just inside the well, and in the centre, a heart-shaped armorial shield inside a cartouche shaped like an ermine-lined robe of blue silk with cloth-of-gold tassels and trimmings and ribbons. Above the shield are two turtle doves facing each other. They are standing on a gold and black silk bolster pillow. Turtle doves, or Love Birds, mate for life and here they represent a wish for a long and happy marriage. Ermine symbolizes purity and honor, silk strength, blue loyalty and gold wealth and status. The armorial shield usually contains, in gold script, the after-market entwined initials of the couple getting married. But this shield is blank. The platter was store stock that was never sold in its day and so initials were never added. It has come down to today ready for your own choice of monogram if you want to personalize it. The huge size, the excellent condition, the turtle doves and the lack of initials are all characteristics that make this platter quite rare and desirable. And it is useful -- for the festive holiday table, as a wall decoration, and for display in a cabinet or on a sideboard. It would also be great in a tray table, which I can custom make for it. The platter appeals to both the collector and the user. Most of all, it is the perfect wedding present for the sophisticated love birds you know.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. A small area of the gold edging has been rubbed, as seen in the photographs, but this is in excellent condition. Evidently, it was never or rarely used.
