About the Item

A striking and unusually large Japanese papier-mâché tray dating to the Meiji period circa turn of the 20th century. This beautifully detailed piece depicts an interior court scene with geisha figures rendered in rich lacquer and delicate hand painted detail. The scale of this tray is exceptional and rare for the form offering a dramatic surface that can be displayed flat or hung as wall art. A handmade hanging mechanism remains on the reverse as found and thoughtfully left intact.
