About the Item

Jacques Pouchain (French, 1925-2005) Large Oval Platter with Stylized Fish Motif circa 1960 Incised and glazed stoneware 14 1/2 inches x 7 1/2 inches x 1 3/4 inches (36.83cm wide x 19.05cm deep x 4.45cm high) L'Atelier Dieulefit, France A superb example of post-war French ceramic art, this large oval platter is a signature work from Jacques Pouchain’s L'Atelier Dieulefit. The piece is dominated by a boldly incised fish, a recurring and iconic motif for the artist. Rendered not with realism but with a graphic, primitive energy, the creature is defined by confident geometric lines and patterns against a rustic, speckled glaze. The incised lines, filled with a dark oxide, create a stark, monochromatic palette that emphasizes the form and texture of the stoneware. A pivotal figure in the French studio pottery movement, Jacques Pouchain brought his background as a painter and sculptor to the ceramic medium. After establishing his studio in the 1950s in Dieulefit, a celebrated center for French pottery, he developed a style that blended modern abstraction with the raw immediacy of ancient art. This approach, similar to that of his contemporary Pablo Picasso in Vallauris, treated the ceramic surface as a canvas. This platter is a quintessential expression of Pouchain’s artistic vision, embodying the tactile, rustic modernism that defines the best of Mid-Century European studio ceramics. (Ref: NY10877-kmrx)
