Set of 4 Napoleonic Silver Chargers Heavy Gage Museum-Quality Late 19th Century

About the Item

Napoleonic, rare, museum-quality, continental, European silver set of 4 chargers or serving trays, with gilt decorations, adorned with Napoleon's eagles and his profiles as well as wreath motifs from the late 19th century. In extremely heavy gage, they measure 13 3/4'' in diameter (7 1/2'' excluding the rim) by 2/3'' in height, weigh an impressive 197 troy ounces, and bear hallmarks as shown. Robert and William Wilson, silver platter or tray, from the mid-19th century, with a gadrooned rim and exquisitely engraved foliate motifs. It measures 17 1/2'' in length by 13 1/4'' in width by 7/8'' in height, weighs 49.8 troy ounces and bears hallmarks as shown. The dedication to Hon. N.B. Browne at the center can be related to Nathaniel Borradaile Browne, (1819-1875), a Philadelphia lawyer, businessman, and public servant. He served in both the federal and the Pennsylvania state governments, worked on the Philadelphia Centennial in Fairmount Park, and became the first president of Fidelity Trust Company. He was an Ivy League alum of the prestigious University of Pennsylvania. Robert & William Wilson were American silversmiths in Philadelphia, active in partnership from roughly 1825–1846, then continuing as a mark until 1877. It was succeeded by William Wilson & Son. Georg Jensen by J. Rohde sterling silver charger/ dinner plate in celebrated Acorn pattern number 642A. It measures 11'' in diameter by 3/4'', weighs 22.2 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown. Johan Rohde hailed from a wealthy family and studied medicine prior to enrolling in the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1882. A forward-thinking, anti-establishment artist, he left after less than a year, disillusioned by their refusal to accept modern trends. Rohde possessed a tireless creative mind and, in addition to painting and drawing, was also a lithographer, graphic artist, bookbinder, and designer. He embraced the Scandinavian design movement which, similar to the Arts & Crafts movement in America, encouraged the application of artistic sensibility to everyday objects. Rohde designed furniture and silverware for his own home, which led him to commission Georg Jensen to execute one of his hollowware designs.
