George III Sauceboat Made in London in 1783 by John Denzilow
About the Item
This very fine and beautiful Sauceboat stands on an oval pedestal foot decorated with applied beading and a band of bright cut designs. The high, elongated, main body also displays a beaded rim and is engraved with an upper border of unusual crisp bright cut and prick dot designs. Both sides of the main body are engraved with an oval cartouche containing a set of contemporary script initials. Unusually, this example has a high loop handle, also decorated with beading, which is seldom seen on sauceboats of the period. The sauceboat is very well marked in the foot, is in excellent condition and is of a very good gauge and weight.
Beaded Sauceboats are rare, especially with beaded handles. This is a design which was also made by Hester Bateman. John Denzilow was an exceptional maker, of the finest quality, whose work does not survive in large quantities.
Measures: Height, to the top of the handle 6 inches, 15cm.
Length, handle to spout 7.45 inches, 18.63 cm.
Width 3.8 inches, 9.5 cm.
