19th Century Porcelain Lidded Hot Chocolate Cups & Saucers by Dihl et Guerhard

About the Item

Charming pair of early 19th century porcelain-lidded hot chocolate cups with matching saucers by Dihl et Guerhard, Paris. Each piece is painted ‘en grisaille’ with children at various playful pursuits in landscapes within gilt-band borders. The detailed painted vignettes of children playing games on an unusual nankin ground is typical of the output of this Paris manufactory and provides an insight into the types and range of games played by children in France at the end of the 18th century. Dihl et Guerhard were one of the leading porcelain factories in Paris, and specialised in a particular type of hard-paste porcelain, often referred to as ‘true porcelain’. circa 1810.
