Chinese Export Armorial Porcelain Tea Caddy, Arms of Prince Willem IV of Orange

About the Item

Chinese export Armorial Porcelain teapoy or tea caddy, Royal Coat of Arms, Arms of Prince Willem IV of Orange (1711-51), Prince of Nassau-Dietz and Orange Circa 1748 The Chinese Export armorial tea caddy is painted in iron-red, gilt and green enamels. The coat of arms for the Prince of Orange supported by gilt lions and surmounted by a coronet, all resting on a gilt pediment with a banner inscribed "Vivat Oranye". The borders with crossed cornucopiae, gilt coronets and floral festoons. The tea caddy is centered with a coat of arms of Prince Willem IV of Orange, Prince of Nassau-Dietz and Orange and Stadholder of Frisia, of Groningen, of Drenthe and Guelders, Zeeland, Holland, Utrecht and Overjissel and in 1748 made hereditary Stadholder of all the United Provinces of Holland, restoring the hereditary rule to the House of Orange. In 1734 he married Anne of Hanover (1709-59), the English Princesss Royal. This was sold in January 22, 2002 at the Benjamin Edwards III Collection of Chinese Export Porcelain, Lot 169. Paper label inside cover with B.F. Edwards Collection label with collection no. 1608 and purchase date of 1982. Reference: "Chinese Armorial Porcelain for the Dutch Market", Dr. Jochem Kroes, Page 309-310, #226, for the spoon tray with the same design (now owned by Earle D. Vandekar of Knightsbridge) The author suggests while the service could have been order by the Prince it is more probable that it was ordered by one of his supporters celebrating the election of Prince Willem IV to the office of stadhouder or Stadholder of the United Provinces of the. Netherlands. Before that he was already Stadholder of Friesland, Groningen, Gelderland and Drenthe, but in 1747 this office was restored to the House of Orange for all the Dutch provinces and declared permanently hereditary. Many Orangist families were interested in ordering such sets and there were great celebrations in both the Netherlands and Batavia.
