Chinese Export Porcelain En Grisaille Mythical Plate,
Venus, Cupid, Adonis and Minerva,
Circa 1745
The Chinese Export circular porcelain plate is painted en grisaille with a scene from Greek mythology. Venus is in her chariot in a cloud above with Cupid firing an arrow at a male figure lying on the ground below. Looming over him is a female figure in armor protecting him with her shield. The male figure is probably Adonis while the female figure is most likely Minerva.
Dimensions: 9 inch diameter x 1 inch height
Reference: China For the West, David Howard and John Ayers, Volume One, Page 336-337, No. 333, for a teapot with the same design. The author mentions that this is an unusual subject.
