Japanese Arita "Gokujou Nishikihanakago Kikyoubuchi" vase

About the Item

This is a hand-painted piece using the techniques of sometsuke (underglaze blue) and uwa-e (overglaze painting), resulting in a luxurious somenishiki (dyed brocade) piece. The design is reminiscent of layered clothing, and the upper part of the piece represents the petals of the bellflower. The bellflower was considered a flower dedicated to the gods, and was believed to bring good luck and ward off misfortune.
