Jean Girel, Stormy Sea, Coupe aux Oiseaux, Green Bowl, France, 2011

About the Item

Unique, signed and dated. The great diversity and originality of Girel’s work is the result of his wholly unique approach. His techniques are not found in any ceramics textbook, but in the laboratory of his mind. His materials are not procured from the usual suppliers; the clay and minerals come from the hills around his home and are excavated in his travels. His art is of the earth, quite literally. He observes natural phenomena and attempts to replicate in his kiln the “secret metamorphoses of the planet.” And he succeeds in the way that all great artists do: by illuminating the unknown and making the familiar newly compelling.

Black glazed ceramic pitcher with green glints by Jean Girel, French ceramist This is a very beautiful ceramic pitcher. The shape of the jug and the handle remind us of the shapes of popular pottery works, while the very refined work of the enamel shows the great mastery of the ceramist Jean Girel. The glaze is a deep black illuminated by green glints. It is an object which is at the same time rough and elegant, it emanates strength and softness. Very sober, it can be integrated in any type of interior, particularly of wabi-sabi inspiration. The signature "Jean Girel" is below the base. Jean Girel is one of the most famous french ceramist art masters of the 21st Century. Inspired by the chinese Song ceramics...
