About the Item
Meissen Rococo harlequin with bagpipes of most lovely appearance.:
The lovely harlequin is sitting on a rocky base which is decorated with some flower blossoms with leaves. The male figurine seizes bagpipes with both hands, seeming to be a bit thoughtful. He is wearing typical harlequin's garments and a pointed hat.
Superb appearance, fine multicolored painting of various shades, the details are worked with greatest skill.
Please note that this is a quite early Meissen figurine of the original Rococo period (circa 1740-1750)
Manufactory: Meissen.
Dating: made second quarter of 18th century, circa 1745.
Design of the figure before 1736.
Small underglaze blue meissen sword mark of Pre-Marcolini period at reverse side of rocky base - area below / First quality
Material: White porcelain, glossy finish, finest painting.
Technique: Handmade porcelain.
Designer: Johann Joachim Kaendler
Kaendler was chief sculptor at Meissen manufactory from 1742 to 1775. He is the most famous modeller Meissen manufactory ever had and created famous series such as Shepherd Figurines, Comedian's Children, Gardener Children (together with Acier), Paris Town Criers (together with Reinicke and Meyer), Gallant Figurines, etc.
This early Harlequin model is close to the later figurines of Series of the Commedia dell'Arte, once ordered by Duke of Weissenfels during the fourties of the 18th century and created by Peter Reinicke and Johann Joachim Kaendler.
