About the Item

Meissen Porcelain Milk Jug, without cover,decorated in the Kakiemon style and exhibiting the potting into the pear-shape and creating the moulded and scrolled spout using the uniformly thickly potted hardpaste porcelain and also the 'J' shaped handle and having made the single firing of the porcelain and the glaze.The shape accords with the Milk Jug housed in the V&A Collection ref. C.994&A-1919 Augustus the Strong,patron of the Meissen Porcelain Works,had within his private collection Japanese enamelled porcelains decorated in the manner that had been developed by the Kakiemon family in the Arita province during the seventeenth-century. They in turn had been inspired by decoration of Chinese Ming porcelains.The Japanese porcelain - nigoshi-te, a milk-white porcelain - was decorated overglaze as in the manner of Meissen.The whole collection was housed in the Japanese Palace and the Meissen factory workers used these pieces to influence some of their decorat ion. The decoration on the Milk Jug offered accords with that of a bottle vase (underglaze blue AR mark), excepting a pronounced yellow flower on the bottle vase ( see Morley-Fletcher pp. 38-39) as decorated in bold colours of Meissen by A F von Loewenfinck and based on the Kakiemon original.
