Porcelain Figure Group 'Smeraldina & Truffaldino', Augarten Vienna, Ca. 1930

About the Item

Depiction of a 'gallant couple' in clothing with harlequin decoration, the lady in an elegantly cut dress with hat, looking to the side and offering her hand to the gallant for a kiss, the latter in front of her in a wide lunge and kissing her with his hat off. On a flat oval base with gold edges and inscription: 'Smeraldina und Truffaldino' on the front, 'Helene und Hermann Thimig' on the reverse. The THIMIG GRUPPE figure was designed by Prof. Albin Döbrich in 1930. Both actors are extremely detailed, the facial expressions and gestures correspond completely to the roles played - the courtship of the beloved - the devotion and the languishing gaze give the figures of Smeraldina and Truffaldino in porcelain liveliness and joie de vivre. 'Servant of Two Masters' by Carlo Goldoni was performed on April 1, 1924 for the reopening of the Theater in der Josefstadt, after Max Reinhardt (director 1924-1926) had the traditional building rebuilt. The main roles were played by the siblings Helene (later Max Reinhardt's wife) and Hermann Thimig as Smeraldina and Truffaldino. Father Thimig played Pantalone in the same performance. The era of the 'Thimig Theater' had begun, as the Viennese affectionately called 'die Josefstadt' in the 1920s. In the course of the year, the youngest brother Hans Thimig also came to Josefstadt. From then on, the whole family worked for years either at the Burgtheater or the Theater in der Josefstadt. Designed by PROF. ALBIN DÖBRICH (1872 - 1945) - Sculptor in Vienna, worked mainly for the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory Augarten. Although he also created numerous other animal figures for Augarten, his Series of the riders of the Spanish Riding School from 1825/1926 is still an important business card for the company today.
