About the Item

Brand of the Royal Porcelain Factory of El Buen Retiro at the base. Located on fine square pedestals, the three figures have been located. The three children appear seminaked, their fronts decorated with bands and accompanied by various elements: horn of abundance with fruits, clouds and an animal; A bird and a cage; An anvil, a hammer and a beast surrounded by flames. These types of figures were highly appreciated in the 18th century for the decoration of the most select interiors. Typically, minor themes were chosen, starring couples dressed as peasants, putti, cupids, etc., always with a clear preference for children's reasons and for the inclusion of flowers in the compositions. When subjects of Roman Antiquity were chosen, they were secondary, always avoiding infidelities, wars, deaths or the like, always maintaining the necessary decorum for a work destined to go on a shelf or a furniture of a residence of great importance. In the present case, the costumes of the figures indicate their belonging to classical mythology: the hammer and anvil would refer to Hephaestus; The bird that holds up another of the figures could be an eagle, so this child could be Zeus; The one who bears the cornucopia, having this grapes, may be Bacchus. They are habitual in these works the deviations of the traditional iconography, as well as the fact of not showing deformities or ugliness in them. Similar subjects to these magnificent porcelain figures were very popular and appreciated in the 18th century (proof of this are works similar to these created by factories such as Meissen or Capodimonte). The three are from the Royal Factory of El Buen Retiro, a luxury factory located in Madrid and founded in 1760 by Carlos III (with craftsmen and materials from the Neapolitan of Capodimonte) to work for the monarch and the upper class. It was one of the main centers of creation of works in porcelain of all Europe, well recognized by the quality of its works as by the variety of models that left their workshops, in hard paste as in soft paste. Its production was interrupted with the arrival of the French in 1808, and the factory and warehouses destroyed in 1812. Size: 8 x 10 x 23 cms.
