18th Century Large Liverpool Cream Ware Jug for the American Market, circa 1780s

About the Item

Late 18th Century Large Liverpool Cream Ware Jug Made for the American Market, circa 1780s, an extremely large soft paste pottery pitcher made by the English Liverpool potteries for export to the newly independent United States of America, where the market for patriotic items was understandably great. The extremely large tapering cylindrical vessel has a large sparrow beak pouring spout and applied strap handle. The transfer decorations comprise a larboard side view of an American Brig under full sail flying the American ensign off the spanker gaff; under the spout a spreadwing eagle with 13 stars, banner inscribed "E Pluribus Unum," a patriotic shield on body, and clutching arrows and fig leaves; on the reverse the inscription "PEACE, PLENTY AND INDEPENDENCE," and the Neoclassical female figure of Peace destroying the tools of war, and the figure of Plenty holding a cornucopia, flanking the symbols representing the American military might won independence. The pottery jug is in fine strong condition with bright and clear decoration. There may have been old professional restoration at the lower attachment of handle, and beneath the eagle on the spout side; if so, it miraculously missed touching any of the transfer images. It is amazing to find such a large vessel of fragile soft paste remaining in such good condition. Truly a heroic piece. Measures: 11 in H x 10-3/4 in L x 8-3/4 in Deep
