American yellowware pottery is a type of earthenware named after its yellow appearance given to it by the clay used for its production. Originating in the United Kingdom in the late 18th century, it was also produced in the eastern United States from the late 1820s.
Yellowware is made from a type of clay that contains iron oxide, which gives it its characteristic yellow color. The clay is fired at a lower temperature than other types of pottery, which makes it softer and more porous. This makes yellowware ideal for cooking and serving food, as it absorbs heat evenly and does not crack or chip easily.
Yellowware was first produced in the United States in the late 1820s in Ohio and New Jersey. The pottery quickly became popular, and by the mid-19th century, there were dozens of yellowware potteries operating in the United States.
Yellowware potteries produced a wide variety of items, including bowls, plates, cups, pitchers, and jugs. The pottery was often decorated with simple designs, such as flowers, leaves, or geometric patterns. Some potteries also produced yellowware with more elaborate decorations, such as landscapes or portraits.
Yellowware reached its peak of popularity in the mid-19th century. However, by the early 20th century, it had been largely replaced by other types of pottery, such as stoneware and porcelain. Today, yellowware is still produced by a few small potteries, but it is no longer as common as it once was.
