English Mocha Pottery Blue & Yellow Slip Jug with Cat's Eye Decoration

About the Item

Mocha Pottery Blue & Yellow Slip Jug with Cat's eye decoration, Early 19th Century. This early 19th-century mocha-decorated pottery jug features a central band of yellow slip adorned with a striking tri-color cat's eye decoration. The soft yellow band is flanked by wide bands of plain blue slip, creating a visually arresting contrast. Four groupings of thin brown and white lines provide a decorative separation between the central panel, the top rim, and the foot rim. Dimensions: 7 inches high x 8 3/4 inches wide x 6 1/4 inches deep There is a tiny spot of a clay adhesion from the firing-see last photo. Additional Information: Mochaware is a type of pottery characterized by its marbled or mottled decorative effects, achieved through a technique known as slip decoration. Slip is a liquid clay mixture that can be applied to the surface of pottery to create designs. The term "cat's eye" refers to a specific type of mocha decoration that resembles the iris of a cat's eye, typically featuring concentric circles of contrasting colors. The early 19th century represents the peak period of mochaware production in England. (Ref: NY10472-mrrx)
