Clive Bowen Studio Pottery Slip Trailed Honey Glazed Jug

About the Item

A very stylish slip trailed studio pottery jug decorated in honey glazes by renowned potter Clive Bowen (British, b.1943) and dating from the 20th century. Clive Bowen is considered as one the great British studio potters and is renowned internationally with his work in collections worldwide. He is based in Devon where he uses the local red earthenware clay and has worked with both Michael Leach at Yelland Pottery and in the early 1970’s with Michael Cardew at Wenford. This wonderful example of Bowen’s work is very typical of the styles produced by Michael Cardew and may indeed have been made around the time spent at Wenford. The bulbous red earthenware jug stands on a narrow round flat unglazed base with a combed finish. The jug has a wide round body with a narrow short funnel shaped neck with a slightly widening rim and shaped pouring spout. A thick loop handle extends from the rim to the middle of the body. The jug is decorated with brown temoku slip trailed patterning along with other designs within a yellow honey glazed finish. The inner jug decorated in deep brown glazes. The jug is not apparently marked. Provenance: from the collection of a private gentleman and originating from the UK art market. In good condition.
