About the Item

English Plain Creamware Pounce Shaker or Sugar Castor, Circa 1775 This circular pounce shaker is a prime example of plain, undecorated creamware from the late 18th century. The piece features a flared, stepped, and domed foot, which is fitted with a cork stopper to securely hold the pounce. The body of the shaker is reeded and bowed, tapering to a narrow neck that supports a domed top with a distinctive, stem-like finial. The top is skillfully pierced with a variety of small, circular holes arranged in different patterns, allowing for the controlled dispersal of the pounce. Historically, pounce pots were essential tools used to contain pounce, a fine powder made from substances such as pumice, ground cuttlefish bone, or gum sandarac rosin. This powder was applied to paper or parchment to absorb excess ink, prevent blotting, and prepare the writing surface for a clean, permanent inscription. Dimensions: 5 1/2 inches high x 2 3/4 inches diameter. (Ref: NY10893-mrr)
